ADI Standards Check Advice – Part 1 – RISK

I mentioned in an earlier post how the standards check is linked to both the National Standard for Driving Cars, and the National Standard for Driving Instruction and you should familiarise yourself with both of those documents along with the marking sheet (SC1).

1.  There is no role play option. Hopefully everyone should be aware of this now.
2.  There is no “Fleet Check Test” The same teaching competencies apply whatever level you are teaching
3.  You can take a Full License Holder (you always have been able to)
4. You can’t take someone who has passed ADI Part 2 or another ADI  (as always)

The top ten reasons for failing according to the DVSA are:

1. Lesson Plan not adapted to help work towards goals
2. Trainer did not ensure pupil understood the sharing of responsibility for risk
3. Teaching style not suited to learning style and ability
4. Pupil not encouraged to analyse problems and take responsibility for learning.
5. Pupil not given appropriate and timely feedback
6. Pupil not given sufficient feedback to understand safety critical incidents
7. Pupil not encouraged to reflect on own performance.

I’ll deal with them out of order starting with 2 and 6  –

RISK

This is a new one for many ADI’s.

The Risk Management section of the SC1 Form is related to Unit 6.4 of the Training standard –  you should read that unit to ensure that you know what is required.

I’m not going to rehash everything from it here, but key parts of the ADI 1 are worth repeating

“There are two aspects to the management of risk

At all times the ADI is responsible for their safety the safety of the pupil and the safety of other road users.In particular circumstances this can extend to taking physical control of the vehicle.If the ADI fails in this basic responsibility at any time they will fail the standards check.

This has always been the case even under the old Check Test – Clearly you can’t allow a pupil to do something that endangers themselves or others.

So on to the second aspect :-

“From a training point of view the ADI is also responsible for developing the pupils awareness of and ability to manage risk (as the driver the pupil also has responsibilities) This is the objective being assessed in this section”

The ADI 1  even goes on to give direct examples of statements you can make at the start of a lesson with a Learner, and a full license holder, and even then states that blanket statements alone are not sufficient to meet the criteria.

There are also  examples of questions you can use to meet the criteria such as “asking the pupil what sorts of issues create risk such as alcohol or drugs”

Note “Even if the ADI and the pupil have had discussions about risk before the observed lesson, they must show that they are actively managing the issue for assessment purposes” – So yes that means mentioning the dual controls.
