The ‘pull up on the right’ and reverse back exercise.

By April 15, 2017June 20th, 2017Uncategorized

The ‘pull up on the right’ and reverse back exercise.

I have now as of June 2017 had confirmation of the below:

The examiner will ask the candidate to pull up the right hand side of the road. somewhere safe and convenient.

This will be on a “busier” road , but one with plenty of room to stop on the right.

(The candidate won’t be asked to pull up on the left first an then move off and stop on the right as originally reported)

You will then be asked to  reverse two car lengths and rejoin the carriageway when safe.

The stop won’t be in front of a parked car.  (as in this is not a requirement of the exercise but circumstances may mea it is in front of one)

If another road user comes up and parks behind the candidate during the exercise then it will be aborted (and presumably retried).

The examiner will provide assistance to allow the candidate to see past a parked car if this happens and there is one in front obstructing vision.

Reversing manoeuvres will be changed

The ‘reverse around a corner’ and ‘turn-in-the-road’ manoeuvres will no longer be tested, but you should still be taught them by your instructor.

You’ll be asked to do one of 3 possible reversing manoeuvres:

  • parallel park at the side of the road
  • park in a bay – either driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out (the examiner will tell you which you have to do) – The driving forward into a bay exercise will NOT be done at the test centre
  • pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for 2 car lengths and rejoin the traffic

My earlier thoughts on this exercise can be found here: https://xtdriving.com/2016/11/27/new-driving-test-parking-on-the-right/
